Runway 09/27 (Buitenveldertbaan) at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol was constructed late 1960s. The runway is 3450 meters long and 45 meter wide. The Dutch A4 motorway traverses via a tunnel under this runway.
Major maintenance was planned in 2025 to keep the Buitenveldert Runway safe for the next few years. In just over four months, renovations were carried out to bring the runway up to current standards. Parts dating back to the 1960s were replaced. A challenging and complex project due to the various works on and around the runway, including the junction with Runway 18L-36R (Aalsmeerbaan).
A total of 100,000 tonnes of asphalt was paved during the maintenance and renovation period. The two top asphalt layers were replaced and cracks in the third asphalt layer was repaired (360,000 m2).
This involved reusing the old asphalt in the new polymer modified asphalt containing 60% recycled asphalt (RAP). For this Sealoflex® polymer modified bitumen SFB 5-90 (LT) was supplied. With Sealoflex® SFB 5-90 (LT), in combination with a rejuvenating agent, it was possible to meet the strict tight tender specifications of the asphalt even with 60% RAP.
